The prototype spotted did not have any rear doors, indicating that it was still in the early stages of production.

Only the three-door variant of the first-generation Jimny has been sold globally.

Suzuki is working on a Jimny with a longer wheelbase for more usability.

In 2022, Mahindra Thar will finally have a competitor, although in a five-door form.

The same 105 Ps 1.5-litre petrol engine should be offered in the five-door model.

In India, a 1.5-litre diesel version may also be in the works.

Prices can begin at around Rs 10 lakh.

It'll most likely be a Nexa model.

The fourth-generation model of Suzuki Jimny is expected to be launched in India by the end of this year. Its 3 door version available in the international market is not offered here but for India, the company is working on its extended 5 door version with an extended wheelbase. The long-wheelbase version of the Jimny has been spotted for the first time during testing in Europe.

The spare tire can be seen clearly on its tailgate. The rear door is still not seen here, but the extended rear window panel can be seen. Although the Jimny, which was spotted during testing, was completely covered, there has been no change in its front profile, while the wheels have also looked similar to the standard model of the Jimny. At the same time, the interior of this prototype model has not been seen, but it can be said that it will feature a touchscreen infotainment system and climate control.

This is not the first time Suzuki had increased the wheelbase of the Jimny for the Indian market. In the mid-1980s, the company did the same experiment in its Indian version of Gypsy. However, this time its possibly Indian version will feature the rear door which was not given in the Gypsy. On the other hand, the company can also offer a long-wheelbase version of the 3 doors Jimny in the global market.

We have done Jimny's comparison with the sub-4 meter SUV segment's popular cars Mahindra Thar and Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza on the length and wheelbase front here. Let's take a look at this:

Model Suzuki Jimny Mahindra Thar Maruti Vitara Brezza
Lenght 3645 mm 3985 mm 3995 mm
Wheelbase 2250 mm 2450 mm 2500 mm

The long-wheelbase avatar of the Jimny can feature an all-wheel drivetrain with a low range transfer case. Apart from this, the option of a 1.5-litre petrol engine can also be given in this SUV, which is also given in Vitara Brezza, Ciaz, Ertiga and S-Cross. This engine is capable of generating power of 102 Ps and torque of 130 Nm with a 4-speed automatic gearbox. Maruti can also offer this SUV as an affordable product here only with the front-wheel-drive system.

At present, this long-wheelbase version of Jimny is still being prepared. Meanwhile, production of 3 door version of Maruti Suzuki Jimny has started, which will be exported to outside countries. Because of the increasing demand for Mahindra Thar's new generation model, the 5 door model of Maruti Jimny can be launched here by early 2022.

The price of the Jimny can be kept up to Rs 10 lakh which can be sold through Maruti's Nexa dealership. Here it will compete directly with the Force Gurkha, while it will also compete with Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos and Renault Duster.
