After many speculations, we have received confirmation of Tesla coming to India. The US EV manufacturer plans to officially accept bookings from next month, and deliveries will begin by the end of the first quarter of FY 2021-2022.

According to an English website, the first Tesla car to be launched in India will be the Tesla Model 3. Elon Musk first announced its intentions to enter the Indian market in 2016 and the company had already started pre-booking, where Paytm founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma, Vunik CEO Sujayath Ali and Pinstorm CEO Mahesh Murthy like some people booked it.

The report says Tesla has achieved the desired global sales figure for the Model S and Model X and is seeking a similar increase for the Model 3. Hence its launch in India certainly seems possible. The report also states that Tesla is planning to open a plant in India.

The opening of the company's plant in India is not surprising, as the company was already looking to invest in India. Tesla's plant and research and development centre could be in Maharashtra or Kerala and the company had discussed with the state governments for this. Therefore it would be safe to assume that the company can grow in a year or two.

Local production of Tesla vehicles will not only make them more accessible to Indian buyers but will also help in the vision of the Indian government to electrify India's automobile industry. The Tesla Model 3 is the entry-level model in the company's range and is sold in standard range (RWD), standard Range Plus (RWD), long-range (AWD), and long-range performance (AWD).

The battery of this car ranges from 50 kWh to 75 kWh and the driving range is from 381 km to 580 km (tested by WLTP). The Tesla Model 3 will enter the Indian market as a CBU product and is expected to start at around Rs 55 lakh. There is no competition in India in this segment and it will be offered as a luxury car.
