Skoda Rapid's base model Rider discontinued

At launch, it was considerably cheaper while providing all basic comforts and a 110 Ps turbo-petrol engine.

Rapid now get an automatic gearbox from the new base variant Rider Plus.

Now the price of this Skoda car is between Rs. 7.99 lakh to Rs. 13.29 lakh (ex-showroom).

It is still the cheapest compact sedan car in India.

The company may launch the second generation Rapid in India in 2021.

Skoda launched the Bs6 Rapid sedan in May 2020, and the company reintroduced its base variant Rider as well. Now the company has discontinued the base model Rider and the Rider Plus is now the new base variant of this sedan.

The Rider variant of Skoda car has been quite popular and once the company had to stop booking of this variant due to high demand. However, instead of this, the company launched Rider Plus in July 2020 with some additional features.

Now the Skoda Rapid has priced between Rs. 7.99 lakh and Rs. 13.29 lakh (ex-showroom). The Rider variant was priced at Rs. 7.49 lakh and was also cheaper than the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios Turbo, the Nios Turbo is priced at Rs. 7.75 lakh. However, Skoda Rapid is still the cheapest car in the segment with a starting price of Rs. 7.99 lakh.

Like the other variants, the discontinued rider variant was given a 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine that generates 110 Ps of power and 175 Nm of torque. The only 6-speed manual gearbox was available in this variant while 6-speed torque converter gearbox has been optioned from its new base variant Rider Plus.

Skoda offered all the basic features in the base variant Rider including features such as auto AC, 2-din audio system (2 speakers and Bluetooth connectivity function), front and rear charging sockets. Its new base variant Rider Plus has a 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system, while the top of the line variant has an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system supporting Android Auto and Apple Carplay connectivity. The Skoda Rapid Rider variant used to get features such as dual front airbags, ABS and read parking sensors for passenger safety.

Skoda Rapid's competition in the segment is from the new Honda City, Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, Hyundai Verna, Toyota Yaris and Volkswagen Vento. There are speculations that the company may launch a second-generation Rapid sedan in 2021.
