A promising alternative to some luxury hatchbacks is the aggressively priced Magnite subcompact SUV.
Nissan Magnite entered the sub-4 meter SUV segment a few days back. The design of this SUV is very good. It is priced between Rs. 4.99 lakh to Rs. 9.35 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) and this price will be valid till 31 December. It is cheaper by Rs. 1.70 lakh than other compact SUV in the segment, while its price is lower than many cars in the premium hatchback segment also. In such a situation, on the price front, we have done its comparison with the car of the premium hatchback segment also, the result of which is as follows:-
This SUV has two 1.0-litre petrol engines. With its naturally aspirated petrol engine (72 Ps), a manual gearbox option has been given. At the same time, there is a choice of manual and CVT automatic with its turbocharged petrol engine (100 Ps). Since this car is equipped with a petrol engine only, we have compared it to only petrol variants of cars in the premium hatchback segment:-

• The entry-level variant of Nissan Magnite XE is much cheaper than the current premium hatchback on offer in India. It has a 1.0-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine that is capable of generating 72 Ps of power and 96 Nm of torque. Along with the engine, it has a 5-speed manual gearbox. This is the least powerful engine option on this list.
• The Magnite XE variant is Rs. 45000 more affordable than the base variant of Tata Altroz. At the same time, it is cheaper by Rs. 65000 and Rs. 1.79 lakh respectively from Maruti Suzuki Baleno and Hyundai i20 hatchbacks.
• The top-spec turbo petrol variant equipped with a manual gearbox of Magnite is much cheaper than the entry-level turbo petrol variant of the i20. However, the entry-level turbo petrol of the i20 is capable of generating more power. Along with the engine, it has a 6-speed iMT gearbox (Clutchless Manual) option.
• The top variants equipped with manual gearboxes of Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Tata Altroz and Volkswagen Polo are Rs. 70,000 cheaper than the top turbo XV premium variants of Magnite.
• The premium hatchbacks of Volkswagen and Hyundai both have 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine options but these engines are more powerful than Nissan's 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine.
• The Maruti Suzuki Baleno here is the only hatchback with which the mild-hybrid variant is available. This variant is capable of giving more mileage. However, its price is quite high, due to which it is costlier than the top variant Alpha.
• There is only one variant of the Honda WR-V crossover car here, which comes in a price range equal to the sub-4 meter SUV Nissan Magnite.

• Hyundai i20 has the option of CVT automatic gearbox with the 1.2-litre petrol engine. At the same time, there is a choice of 7-speed dual-clutch automatic with its 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine.
• The Magnite CVT top variant is one lakh rupees cheaper than the i20 dual-clutch automatic variants.
• Tata Altroz does not offer an automatic gearbox option.
• Here Volkswagen Polo is the only car that comes with a torque converter automatic gearbox. The price of its automatic variants is exactly equal to the top turbo XV premium variants of Magnite.
Nissan Magnite offers a different type of comfort and road presence compared to premium hatchbacks. Its design is also quite different from that of premium hatchbacks. For customers who want to buy a big car on a low budget, Magnite is a good option.
