Renault has confirmed that it will offer 12-volt mild-hybrid technology with its 1.3-litre turbo petrol engine.

This engine was recently introduced in the Duster and its cousin Nissan Kicks.

The Duster's 1.3-liter turbo petrol engine generates 156 Ps of power and 254 Nm of torque. Along with the engine, it offers 6-Speed manual and 7-speed CVT automatic.

The company will first offer its mild-hybrid engine in the European market.

Mild-hybrid turbo petrol engines can be introduced in India by 2021.

Renault added a new 1.3-litre turbo petrol engine to the Duster SUV a few days ago. This engine was first showcased Internationally in 2018. This engine comes with different power tuning according to the model and different country. Now the company has confirmed that it will equip its 1.3-litre turbo petrol engine with 12-volt mild-hybrid technology.

Mild-hybrid technology makes this petrol engine more fuel-efficient and less polluting. This is a more affordable option than a full hybrid system or a plug-in hybrid powertrain. Let us know that the company's 1.3 TCe engine was showcased during Auto Expo 2020. This engine has been given in many models of Nissan under the Renault-Nissan partnership.

This engine in Duster Turbo comes with a 6-speed manual and 7-speed CVT automatic gearbox. This engine is capable of generating 156 Ps of power and 254 Nm of torque. In this sense, it is the most powerful engine in the compact SUV segment. The same engine is also found in Nissan Kicks. The company claims that the Duster Turbo with a manual gearbox gives a mileage of 16.5 km/l. At the same time, with the automatic gearbox, this car is capable of delivering a mileage of 16.42 km/l. However, in our mileage tests, this car has not been able to touch these figures. It is expected that this engine will become even more fuel-efficient after being updated with mild-hybrid technology.

Since Renault has been offering only petrol engines with its cars since April 2020, this is a good opportunity to replace the diesel engines which are known for their higher torque output and better mileage with the mild-hybrid turbo petrol engines. The compact SUV segment is the most popular in the automobile sector in India and there are not many ups and downs in this segment, so the company can take advantage of the opportunity by giving this powertrain. However, the company can only benefit from this for some time until the segment leaders Hyundai and Kia do not offer this technology. Let us know that Maruti already offers mild-hybrid technology for automatic variants with its Cross car. However, its 1.5-litre petrol engine does not offer much better performance than rival cars.

A Renault SUV equipped with a turbo petrol mild-hybrid powertrain in India can be launched by 2021. It is estimated that the company may offer this powertrain first in its Duster. It would be nice if the company also gave it with the next generation Duster, but nothing is decided at the moment. Currently, the turbo petrol variants of the compact SUV Duster are priced between Rs. 10.49 lakh and Rs 13.59 lakh ( ex-showroom, Delhi ). Due to the incorporation of mild- hybrid technology, its price can be kept higher than before.
