Tata Harrier with 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine coming soon

Tata Harrier was first launched with only a diesel engine option and the company recently updated the Harrier diesel engine to comply with the bs6 emission norms. With this update, Tata Motors also bring an option of the automatic transmission with harrier and the FCA sourced 2.0-liter diesel engine of Harrier is also upgraded to produce 170 Ps of power which previously produce 140 Ps of power but the torque output of the engine remains unchanged at 350 Nm.

Tata Motors now confirm that they will soon launch Harrier with a petrol engine. Harrier petrol will come with a 1.5-litre direct-injection turbocharged petrol engine which is the four-cylinder version of a 1.2-litre Revotron turbo engine which does duty on Nexon petrol. This engine will produce 150 Ps of power. Tata Motors, Chief technology officer, Mr Rajendra Petkar said that " we've always had the four-cylinder version of this engine in mind and with 60-70 per cent of Nexon sales now going to the petrol, this is the next step".

Tata Motors only manage to sell only 641 units of Harrier this month whereas its closest rival MG Hector sells 1218 units. Harrier was only available with diesel engine option whereas MG Hector is offered with three engine options diesel, petrol, and petrol hybrid. Hectors 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine produces 145 Ps of power and 250 Nm of torque. Harrier's other rival Jeep Compass is also offered with 1.4-litre turbo petro engine which produces 162 Ps of power and 250 Nm of torque. On the other hand, the upcoming second-gen Mahindra XUV500 will be a segment leader in terms of power output which will come with a new mStallion 2.0-litre TGDi turbocharged petrol engine which was showcased at the Auto Expo 2020 and will produce 190 Ps of power and 380 Nm of torque.

Tata Motors with Harrier petrol will open up its SUV to a whole new set of buyers. With its new diesel automatic and upcoming petrol engine will surely help increase sales number. The upcoming seven-seater variant of Harrier the Tata Gravitas will also get the same engine. This engine will come with drive modes and Tata Motors will also provide automatic transmission option in both the Harrier and the Gravitas at the later stage with paddle shifters and possibly a sports mode. But the main challenge for Tata Motors has improved fuel efficiency and smooth progression.

Tata Harrier retails at Rs 13.69 lakh for the base model and goes up to Rs 20.25 lakh for the top-end automatic transmission model. In Harrier top model you will get features like 6-speed automatic transmission, two-tone 17-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, Xenon HID projector headlamps, 3D LED taillights, Premium Benecke Kaliko Oak brown leather seat cover, Leather-wrapped steering wheel cover, a panoramic sunroof with anti-pinch and rain-sensing closer, an 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with android auto and apple car play, 8 JBL speakers and 1 JBL subwoofer, 7-inch colour TFT display instrument cluster. In terms of safety, it comes with six airbags, ESP ( electronic stability program), HHC ( hill hold) and HDC (hill descent control).
